Well established as a classic reference and specialised textbook, since its first publication in 1973, Heinrich Kuttruff’s Room Acoustics combines detailed coverage with a state of art presentation of the theory and practice of sound behaviour in closed spaces. This sixth edition presents several additional new sections, for instance on the reflection of a spherical wave from a wall, on finite element methods for sound field calculation and on virtual reality, as well as giving an overhaul of the standard material. Particular emphasis is given to the properties and calculation of reverberation, the most obvious acoustical feature of a room. And further key topics include the various mechanisms of sound absorption and their practical application as well as scattering by wall irregularities including pseudo-stochastic structures. Extensive space is given to of psychoacoustic insights and the quality criteria derived from them, along with new procedures for the sensory assessment of concert hall acoustics. As in earlier editions, one full and updated chapter is devoted to the design and performance of electroacoustic systems which nowadays is not just a method for sound amplification but offers many possibilities for correcting acoustic deficiencies and modifying a hall’s natural acoustics. A Chronology of Architecture' presents a fresh perspective on the medium by taking a purely chronological approach to its history, tracing the complex links between structural innovations, social changes, and artistic interventions. Organized around a central timeline that charts the development of architecture from the earliest structures to the present-day skyscrapers and global cities, it features key buildings, together with commentaries and contextual information about the social, political and cultural events of the period in which they were built. Special feature spreads highlight important movements, construction methods and key practitioners. Covering a wide selection of genres, styles and architects, it is invaluable as a comprehensive guide to architecture in all its different forms.

Across the African continent, but especially in the sub-Saharan regions the light provided by the sun has a particularly stark quality, which becomes most apparent in relation to age-old buildings and in the way in which it shapes daily routines. Without relying on artificial light, architecture had to both make use of the sun light to create a light source within a building, yet also protect those living in the houses from the intensity of it. This has resulted in vernacular architecture that works with very few or small openings that render the inside of a building near pitch black while the outside is illuminated by direct sunshine that bears down mercilessly. On the initiative of the lighting company Zumtobel Group, photographer Iwan Baan and architect Francis Kere set out to capture how the sun's natural light cycle shapes vernacular architecture with little to no artificial light sources in Burkina Faso. They travelled to three exemplary locations: Communal compounds in Gando, the main mosque of Bobo Dioulasso and the terraced houses in Dano utilising pots to create skylights. Baan's pictures are accompanied by architectural sketches by Francis Kere, who himself grew up in this light environment and whose architecture is inspired by it. The stunning photographs are printed in a special technique to give a sense of being immersed in the very light conditions that are being documented.
